Alyssa Nanan

Port Of Spain

Summary

I have been a national athlete for 6-7 years on a sports team (martial arts)- travelled abroad with teammates, helped coaches organize small local events, which has helped me develop teamwork skills and foster responsibility and organization skills.

Kickboxing- 2 years
Muay Thai- 5 years (Tazmanian Bulldogs School of Martial Arts and Kickboxing)

Worked on a project for the Ministry of Sport and Community Development partnered with TAFISA- this is a long-term communal development project to meet their sport for all initiatives, which helped build my team skills, allows me to recognize and hone in on my strengths and weaknesses being in a group setting, as well as knowing my role on a team, it has also helped me improve my communication and planning, as well as implementing, ideas and events.

Have volunteered for the Commonwealth Youth Games 2023- fulfilled multiple roles, such as helping the committee set up the Hasley Crawford Stadium for training, helping on both the javelin and track fields during the games, and helping with ushering and directing the athletes throughout the stadium (relevance- gave me experience in multiple roles on a committee which broadened my volunteerism experience, as well as giving me personal observation as to the workings of a team and the DOs and DON'Ts, strengths and weaknesses, and what went right vs wrong in the settings- allowed me to monitor and evaluate on my own, how others and myself worked in the environment).

Have volunteered for other smaller local sports events. This allowed for personal M&E of the workings of those committees, helped build my communication and team skills, and gave me a holistic experience.

Have been to multiple seminars, workshops, and courses, sport and fitness related, as well as team, managerial, and leadership oriented. These have given me a multitude of knowledge about certain topics, as well as guidance on communication and teamwork in professional settings.

Additionally, during my first semester at UWI, I was the First Year Representative for the UWI Sport Faculty for a semester. This has helped refine and build my leadership and teamwork skills, as well as my administrative work for events. Additionally, during my first semester, I created and received approval for the UWI's first Philosophy Club, and was its president for the first semester. With the help of the managerial team I had, it was and is being maintained currently.

During 2020-2021 (pandemic years), I competed and medaled in a virtual and international sports and fitness competition hosted by IFMA (International Federation of Muay Thai Associations), located in Bangkok, Thailand. This was a series of different types of fitness competitions (such as Max Fit, Wai Kru, and shadowboxing), recorded and submitted on an online platform to be judged via execution and performance of technique and number/amount in a given time. I have a growing interest and passion for reading subject-related and informative books about the social fields of study, such as psychology, social psychology, philosophy, and sociology. Much of this interest had stemmed from my previous school-based studies doing Cambridge psychology, CXC sociology, physical education, and social studies.

I have a passion for volunteering and social advocacy, especially in the sporting industry. I also thrive in social environments, interacting with peers/groups, and actively participating in events or anything work-related. I actively search for and welcome any opportunities to gain experience, attain new knowledge, or acquire new skills to diversify and develop myself holistically as both an individual and a part of a community of individuals.

Additional Information

I like to incorporate having fun and interaction with peers into my experiences, work life, and journey of learning and development. I have a passion for learning, which is why my preferred reading material is subject-related. Once I have an interest in the subject matter, I would enjoy studying and doing work for it. Additionally, if the subject is not something I am familiar with, but it piques my interest, I put effort into doing extensive research on it. Therefore, I put effort into what I am doing to accomplish any task I have been given. Once I am learning from it, I will enjoy doing it as well. I enjoy new experiences. However, I prefer to live a holistic lifestyle, so besides reading and doing work, I enjoy social gatherings and going out as well.
